Vanessa Ribeiro is a Partner at Gusmão & Labrunie, where she leads the firm’s Technology Law practice and Intellectual Property Litigation group. She holds an LL.B. from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and an LL.M. in Law & Technology from the University of California, Berkeley. She joined the firm in 2015 and has built her career at the intersection of Intellectual Property, technology, and digital law.
With more than ten years of experience, Vanessa advises clients in both litigation and strategic matters involving trademarks, copyright, patents, trade dress, data protection, and artificial intelligence. She has been involved in landmark cases that have contributed to the development of Brazilian case law and legal scholarship in these fields, including disputes concerning the use of copyrighted works for training artificial intelligence models, the limits of trade dress protection in competitive markets, standard-essential patents and FRAND licensing, the Bolar exemption in pharmaceutical litigation, and the protection of biotechnological inventions. She also advises on regulatory matters involving data protection, content moderation, and the legal compliance of emerging technologies under Brazilian law.
A frequent speaker and visiting lecturer at national and international conferences, Vanessa teaches and presents on Intellectual Property, technology, and data protection to academic, corporate, and institutional audiences. She is the author of Intellectual Property and Technology (University Series, Senac São Paulo Press, 2024) and has published articles in leading Brazilian and international legal journals.
